Simplify a ratio

A ratio compares quantities in the same order they are entered. To simplify a:b, divide both values by their greatest common divisor. For 20:30, the greatest common divisor is 10, giving 2:3.

Equivalent ratios

Multiplying or dividing every term by the same non-zero value creates an equivalent ratio. The ratio 2:3 is equivalent to 4:6 and 10:15. Keep units consistent before comparing quantities, such as converting metres and centimetres to one unit.

Ratio is not always a fraction of the whole

In a 2:3 mixture there are five total parts, so the first quantity represents 2/5 of the total and the second represents 3/5. A ratio with a zero term requires care, and 0:0 cannot be simplified into a meaningful comparison.
